Shoulder stabolization is a very important topic in training as the shoulder is one of the most mobile and unstable joints in the body, but is under constant abuse no matter what your sport or training activity. Including exercises that strengthen this joint should be a part of everyone’s program.
In this video, Nutri-Sport Head Trainer Tasha demonstrates staggered push ups, which is a great exercise for this. Incorporate this into your next chest/shoulder routine, somewhere towards the end.

Back is one of those bodyparts that some people have a hard time with. Why? Mainly because it’s on your back and you can’t see it! One tip I like to use is “pull with your elbows” which helps clients to think of their arms as hooks and focus on contracting the back.
One of my favorite exercises is pull ups, but for many, this is a very difficult exercise to complete. A variation is what I call a “rack chin”. It’s great for lat development, plus it allows those who might not be able to get many pull ups to do more. This is why some will want to add weight to their lap for extra resistance. Make sure you can get a full stretch and really squeeze the lats at the top.

Is there really an “off season”?

This past weekend Mandee and I judged the NANBF USA bodybuilding and figure championships in Chicago. It is the toughest natural competition of the year, as competitors need to qualify for it and each class winner receives their pro card.
I have competed at this event the past three years (last year taking third) and being in the judges seat verses onstage was tough, but very motivating! It got me to re-ignite myself with my training. It got me thinking too, ‘is there every really an offseason’?
I truly believe you need to listen to your body. If you don’t give it a break now and again, you will go into “overtraining” and actually limit your progress. However, cycling your training (and supplements) is key to avoid this stagnation.
No matter what your sport, bodybuilding, triathalon, wrestling, there should be a “de-training” period where you focus on some other aspect that is either an active recovery or a type of cross-training that isn’t going to take you a step backwards. For example, here is a great article about triathletes increasing their weight training in the off season.
Work hard, but work smart and don’t give yourself an excuse to get lazy.
Congratulations to Nutri-Sport clients on their performance!

On October 25th, Nutri-Sport clients Kerri Whitmore and Dendra Onken competed in the NANBF Best of the Midwest
Dendra took 2nd in the open tall class with some amazingly shredded abs and arms! Kerri took first in the open women class, showing great poise, symmetry and mass. Look for her in the upcoming USA competition this weekend in Chicago.
