Got goals?

December 30, 2008 by Ryan Irwin · 2 Comments

This is the time to start making goals for the upcoming year.  Noticed I said goals, verses resolutions.  Goals are meant to be attained, something to strive for.  Areas that I like to focus on (besides just physical) are family, professional, finanical and spiritual.  I would challenge you to set some specific goals (measurable so you can have something to shoot for) and write them down.  Put them in a place you will see them to remind you what you’re shooting for.

Some goals that I have for 2009 is to bench press 315lbs, deadlift 600lbs and win my procard in natural bodybuilding.  How am I planning on achieving these?  First is train like a machine, supplement intelligently, allow proper recovery and regular chiropractic care from True Life Chiropractic.  I continue to push the limits and train smartly, including surrounding myself with positive people that will help achieve these goals.  Below is an example from a deadlift session last weekend and the Full Potential Training studio at Nutri-Sport.

New miracle weight loss remedy discovered!!

It’s near the beginning of a new year and the time when people set goals for the upcoming year (I hate “resolutions” as they are made to not be attained).

I continue to hear ads for the latest and greatest weight loss supplement to ensure that you will lose 20lbs or more.  The can range from a “detox/flush” product or a “fat burner” that helps melt those pounds away!  Do people seriously respond to those 800 numbers, TV commercials and signs in the ground?  It blows me away, as they must or why would there be so many?

When I speak to people about there goals, whether it’s bodyfat loss (notice I didn’t just say “pound lost”) or muscle gain, the first thing I want to find out is what their workout and nutrition habits are.  This needs to be in place first, as you can’t go further without the proper foundation.  That is one reason our Bodysculpting course is so effective as it teaches people lifestyle modifications verses some quick/short-term fix.

There are some very effective products that help optimize fat loss and muscle gain, but people shouldn’t put the cart in front of the horse.  At times I will start with an individualized nutrition plan for clients before we even approach the supplements.

If you or someone you know is looking at “the greatest thing since the invention of the Thigh-master,” I would love the opportunity to see if it’s a worthwhile product or if I can help get something better at probably a cheaper price (after all, all that fancy advertising is expensive!)

Keep training hard!

With all the hype of the latest and greatest supplements out there, this tip talks about getting the basics.  When I say basics, that would be a good multi-vitamin, omega 3 and whey protein.  This video highlights the multi-vitamin.

Reaching new clients around the nation

One of the services that we offer at Nutri-Sport is nutrition planning and consultation.  This is much more that simply “writing up a meal plan”.  It’s an extensive look into people lives, including their lifestyle, schedule, physical characteristics and habits.  We then design a realistic and doable program to help them achieve their goals and continue on after (in other words, make healthy life long habits).  We also touch base on a weekly basis to make sure everything is going well and provide support throughout.

Additionally, we coach individuals who want to take this to another level and compete in physique sports (such as bodybuilding and women’s figure/fitness).  Everyone who works here has been a competitive athlete and we have helped numerous people get into the best shape of their life and get onstage to compete.  This includes the diet, workouts and the all important presentation/prep aspect.

With the competitive season coming up in the spring and the NANBF Natural Iowa on May 9th, people are starting to prep.  We have picked up clients throughout the Midwest through our website that Create Wow Media did for us.  This is exciting and fun to be able to assist outside of Clive, Iowa.

If you (or someone you know) have ever thought about a bodybuilding or figure competition as a goal, come in and chat with us.  We’d be happy to help you get there!

In this video, Nutri-Sport owner Ryan Irwin demonstrates glute/ham raises in the Full Potential studio. These are a great exercise to strengthen the hamstrings and glutes. It is very difficult -as you can tell in the video ;-) , so having either a partner or holding a bar in front is helpful to get you out of the bottom position. You can see in this video that the unassisted reps are a little sloppy, but with help, a full range of motion is achieved on the second half of the set. A great aspect of this exercise is that it puts little pressure on the lower back. You can do these on leg day, 2-3 sets of 8-12.

Optimizing your metabolism

December 4, 2008 by Ryan Irwin · Leave a Comment

Everyone wants to lose bodyfat and gain muscle. Most want to try to do it at the same time. While this is possible, it is much more efficient to focus on one or the other. When we work with our clients, one of the first steps is to decide which goal is more important (building muscle or losing bodyfat). This is the area that we then attack.

By doing this, you optimize your metabolism. For example, to build muscle, you need an excess of calories (but not overly excessive-don’t want a bunch of bodyfat to pile on). While we carefully monitor and increase the nutrients, the client not only is adding muscle tissue, but is also speeding up the metabolism. Once we get bodyfat levels to the top end range we are comfortable with, we switch gears to fat loss. By doing so, we quickly create a calorie deficit, and couple this with a supercharged metabolism, the bodyfat comes off quickly. Then before the metabolism begins to slow and the risk of muscle loss sets in, we switch gears back to “mass mode” to add muscle tissue with a now lower bodyfat level.

This method of mass/cut mode is the most effective way to achieve the end result and help the client look and feel their absolute best!

Squats are one of the best exercises to develop leg and hip power, strength and size. This variation called “box squats” forces one to come to a complete stop, then drive out of the “hole” without the rebound effect. By doing so, it really helps to increase the power. This is great for sports, powerlifting and anyone who wants to increase there power or just learn how to squat to the proper depth.
