Spring is getting close, time to take it up another level!

Congratulations to everyone for making it through another Iowa winter!  Okay, it might not be completely done yet, but we’re getting very close!  This issue will hopefully help you take your fitness and health goals up another notch as we get closer to shorts weather. :-)

Healthy High Protein Carrot Cake
3 cups oat flour or wheat bran     1 Tbsp SF/FF cheesecake or vanilla pudding mix
2 scoops vanilla protein                1-2 TBSP Splenda/Stevia/Naturally Sweet
1/4 cup skim milk                          1 tsp vanilla extract
8 egg whites                                  8 oz carrots shredded
Ground cinn/nutmeg to taste         1/2 cup raisins or dried cranberries

1. Combine all ingredients in large bowl (mix dry ingredients first, then liquid).
2. Spray loaf pan w/cooking spray
3. Pour batter in pan
4. Bake at 350 for 35 to 40 minutes
1/2 loaf: 23 gm protein, 35 gm carbs, 1 gm fat, 241 calories

Quick and easy (kind of) cardio
HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) is the best way to jack up your metabolism and burn off the bodyfat.  By spiking your heartrate at 100% intensity, then backing it off, you cause processes in the body that keeps muscle and loses bodyfat.  An easy and convenient way to do this is by jumping rope, intervaled with walking or jogging.  No excuses not being able to make it to the gym, do it in your basement or kitchen first thing in the morning or late in the evening to get or keep your metabolism going all day!

Nutri-Sport & Full Potential Tip -banded box squats

Powering out of the bottom of a squatting position is important for both athletes and those just wanting to build muscle and strength. In athletics, getting the initial power to propel your body to whatever it is you are doing. In workouts, the bottom portion of the exercise is when you stimulate the most muscle fibers to optimize the effectiveness of the exercise (which is why people who don’t go deep on squats/leg press are losing a lot of benefit).

Big anniversary

Today (February 17th) marks the anniversary when I decided to get into the iron game and start bodybuilding.  It’s been 17 years to be exact.  In that time, I’ve added 67 pounds to my frame (started at 95lbs -same height), bench pressed 305 raw, deadlifted 535 raw, won the overall title at a bodybuilding competition, promoted many bodybuilding contests and have helped many individuals achieve their fitness goals.

I’m not listing this out by any means to brag or boast, as many people have done many very more impressive feats with less effort (i.e. a single parent raising his or her kids), but as an under-sized sophmore in high school, I set some goals and have continued to strive for them.  There was a poster in my high school weight room with the word “dedication” on it.  I looked at that thing every day and keep reminding myself that if I stayed dedicated, I would make progress!

Whatever your goals are (and you should have some set) stay dedicated,  take it day by day and you will achieve them!!

The barbell curl is an excellent mass and strength builder for the biceps. One drawback of this exercise is that it can put added stress on the lower back.

In this video, Nutri-Sport Head Trainer Tasha demonstrates a variation of this exercise in the Full Potential Training studio that will still hit the biceps, but take some of the pressure off the lower back.
