Solution 5

Getting in 5-6 meals a day is critical for muscle mass growth/retention and to keep your metabolism running high.  This can be a challenge in today’s hectic lifestyle schedule.  Meal replacements are handy shakes that you can down in between breakfast/lunch or lunch/dinner to make sure your body has everything it needs.  The new Solution 5 by Scivation is just such a product!  This MRP has a timed release protein that will stick with you, good fats and fiber to keep you satisfied, plus all the other elements your body needs to function at it’s peak!  Give it a try as a convenient way to hit your goals!

Oh Yeah 8oz Ready-to-Drink
The company that hit the market with their increditable Oh Yeah bars has done the same for drinks now too!!  The Oh Yeah RTDs are a slow digesting protein with good fats and taste absolutely amazing!!  They are comparable to Muscle Milk, only are lower in sugar and calories, plus we think taste even better!  Now we not only carry them in the large 14oz size, but also in the 8oz size, which is great for smaller frames.  We sell them individually or by the case and they come in: vanilla, chocolate, cookies & cream, banana and strawberry.  Try a sample at Monday Madness!
.
New bar: Linney Mac
Again, this month convenience is the focus, we have a new bar in that is fantastic!!  Linney Mac bars are a different type of protein bar.  The best way to describe these are almost like a rice crispy bar, with chocolate smothered over the top.  Of course, these are high in protein and will keep you nourished much better than a regular treat would!!  They come in large and small sizes depending on your frame and appetite.  Give them a shot, or try a sample at Monday Madness!

Tren and other prohormones
First, we do carry Tren and other prohormones, but we do NOT push them or sell them lightly.  These are strong and should be used with caution only by those who are at the appropriate level of training, age and conditioning.  The government is cracking down on these substances and many have been discontinued by the manufacturer.  If you are interested in these and would like unbiased information, please come in and see Ryan.

Training tip: Heavy/light
As Ryan was training for the USA, he continued to progress in strength, which was a key in keeping his muscle mass while losing bodyfat.  One of the principals he used was combining a blend of heavy and light exercises.  Compound exercises are those involving two limbs (such as bench press, squats, deadlifts, rows, shoulder press).  When performing these lifts, shoot for a heavier weight that stimulates strength and muscle growth, which would be in the 5-8 rep range.  After starting out your workout with one of these basic exercises, finish the rest with more isolation exercises (such as DB flys, walking lunges, 1 arm rows, lateral raises) in the 8-12 rep range to stimulate growth.  By doing both ranges, you will not only continue to progress in strength, but also in muscle tone.  For more tips or a training program, come in and see one of our certified trainers.

Nutrition tip: Fiber is your friend
This is something that we believe everyone knows but it sometimes help to be reminded.  Fiber is something that you want in abundance in your diet for many reasons.  It’s good for your health (especially for cholesterol and digestion) but it’s also good for your physique.  By keeping your fiber content high, it slows down absorption and digestion of foods.  This does two things.  First, it keeps your blood sugar/insulin levels low, which is what you want to optimize fat loss.  Second, by slowing digestion, you stay full longer, which allows you to stay satisfied in between meals which will be a great help in a calorie deficit diet.  An easy way to do this is by adding psyllium husk powder to your foods and/or shakes.  Of course, eating “brown” carbs or veggies in your meals is essential too.  For more tips or a customized nutrition plan, come in and talk to Ryan.

Supplement tip: Fight “Flu” season
While you know to eat healthy, wash your hands and to cover you mouth, another way to stay healthy is through proper supplementation.  We recommend to stay healthy and keep your immune system in top shape the following: Multi-vitamin, vitamin C (500 mg), vitamin E (400 IU), Omega 3/6/9, and alpha lipoic acid.  These are all high in anti-oxidants and ensure your body is cranking at 100%!

Recipe: Protein Pumpkin Pie
This has been a favorite each year so we thought we would repost it.  This makes 2 pies
8 oz fat free cream cheese, 2 Tbsp skim milk, tub of fat free cool whip, 2 low fat graham cracker crusts, 2 cups skim milk, 1 can pumpkin, 2 pkg jello fat/sugar free vanilla instant pudding, 2 scoops protein powder (we suggest quad pro or UMP), 1/4 tsp cinnamon, 1/8 tsp ginger

Mix cream cheese & 2 Tbsp milk in large bowl w/wire whisk until smooth.  Stir in whipped topping, then spread on bottom of crusts.  Pour 1 cup milk into bowl, add pumpkin, pudding mix, protein powder & spices, mix well.  Spread this over cream cheese layer.

Refrigerate 4 hours or until set, garnish with whipped topping, You can either share the second pie with a friend or cut recipe in half.

Natural USA Contest results and summary!!

October 27, 2009 by · 5 Comments

After 17 weeks of dieting (since the beginning of July), my precontest preparations for the NANBF Natural USA finally got me to the day of the event!  Below are details of the day and pictures, but to save you time, I ended up WINNING MY CLASS AND EARNING MY PRO CARD!!!

My wife, kids and I packed up the car and left Friday morning for IL.  Got there around 4:30 and got right in after eating my afternoon meal of oatmeal and Elite 12 protein to take my polygraph (lie detector test) for banned substances (steroids, Rx diuretics, GH, prohormones, etc).  After that, we got checked into the hotel and I went back to get my first spray tan application, then took my urine test.  After all that, headed back and tried to get some sleep.

Of course woke up at 3 AM and couldn’t go back to sleep, so began my contest day preparations, got my food lined up and stuff packed.  We got there at 7:30, had the competitors meeting and then prejudging started at 9:30.  There was a great turnout, especially for bodybuilders!  In the USA, there were 4 classes of men.  Figure numbers were down a bit, so those of you in figure, look at this show for next year!

My class was going on around noon.  There were 5 individuals in my class and since you had to place in the top 5 in a regional show to compete at the USA, all 5 were tough competition!  One of them I had competed with at this same show 2 years prior where he placed ahead of me.  As a competitor, you can’t get psyched out and worry about the others in your class.  You need to go onstage, pose like you own it and let the judges make the decisions.

That is what I did.  Went out there and nailed my posing!!  Those posing sessions paid off as everyone said I looked very polished and not fatigued.  The judges moved us around and I ended up in the middle for a while, which is always a good feeling.  Towards the end, I got put on an end, but by that point I felt they were looking for other placements.

Long story short, went back to the hotel after prejudging, crashed and got regrouped for finals.  Had people come up and tell me I looked great and that they thought it was mine, but I never let that get into my head as the judges look at everything and I don’t want to get over confident or set myself up for disappointment.

At about 10:00, they called our class up and I nailed my posing routine to the tune of Mortal Kombat (thanks to Joe Richards from Songsmythe Productions for cutting my music!)  After the rest of the class did their routines, they called us out.  Standing in the line up I was mentally ready to hear my name anywhere from 4th on up and just kept reminding myself that I looked my best ever (hit 4.5% bodyfat), which is always the goal (improving on my previous package), anything else was icing on the cake.

They started announcing placements for 5th and 4th, so far so good.  Then when they announced 3rd to the guy that beat me 2 years ago, I started to think “is this really happening??”  It was between me and another guy, who in the prejudging had a lot of people yelling his name and number, which means he was one of the favorites (or brought a fan club with him).  Finally, they announced him as runner up and it hit me, I JUST WON MY PRO CARD!!!!!

After they announced the other class winners (and now new pros) they put the winners together for the overall comparisons.  Of course, we’re all beaming at this point as we just won our pro cards, but they still want to get the overall champ.  I started out on the end (being the short class winner), but I found myself again being moved to the middle!  The judges drilled us throught the poses and I was feeling really good with how I was hitting them.  In the end, the medium-tall class winner, Okechukwu Egungwu, won the overall, which is who I had picked (this man is amazing!)  However, I learned later that I was only 1 point away from the overall title myself, which being competitive onstage with other new pros was a huge victory in itself!!

The moment was surreal and with the emotions, hard to put into words.  Becoming a professional natural bodybuilder is a goal I set 17 years ago and to achieve it is just amazing.  It still hasn’t fully sunk in yet, but every time I tell someone that knows the work I’ve put in, I get emotional.

I absolutely have to thank those that helped me realize this goal.  First, my wonderful wife Mandee, who has put up with me all these years through the training, dieting and crankyness that comes with this sport.  I do my best to try to not let it rule my life, but having her being so understanding and patient is invaluable!!  I also want to thank everyone at Nutri-Sport, who stepped up and help me with making sure I got my training and meals in and for all their encouragement.  Dr Tyler Molstre from True Life Chiropractic for not only his regular care and adjustments, but for helping me stay healthy (combining powerlifting and bodybuilding can take a toll if not careful), grounded and focused, IFPA Pro Layne Norton who was my coach and mentor over the last 2 years of off season and precontest work. I don’t care what sport or level you are at, having a coach pushing you past your normal limits is essential!  Finally, to Cody Nour my training partner for being dedicated, reliable and pushing me in the gym, stepping up when my energy levels and intensity might not be where they needed to be (plus putting up with my attitude that last few weeks!) :-)

My next goals are to compete at the NASA Nationals on January 24th in Oklahoma and then I plan on making my pro bodybuilding debut in June at the IFPA Mr. Universe down south.  Thank you again to EVERYONE for your support and encouragement!!!

Contest prep update -3 days out!!

October 21, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

It is almost game time!!!!  3 days to go for the NANBF Natural USA in Chicago.  As of this morning, I was 4.8% bodyfat according to the skin calipers, right where I want to be!  Closer to home, this weekend is also the NANBF Best of the Midwest in Cedar Rapids if you want to go see what it’s all about. Also, the NASA Iowa Regionals powerlifting competition is in Des Moines.  If you are a physique or strength athlete, lots of options to do this weekend!

This week is all about doing the final preperations to get things ready to go.  Filling out, recharging and focusing.  Posing routine is done, meals/food lined up and last minute details are done.

Last week was a tough week of training and was thrilled to not have lost and in fact gained strength in most of my lifts!!  As the before/after pics show below, I have kept my lean muscle while dropping bodyfat.  This week I have treated as a deload week and am excited to start back up next week with my powerlifting cycle for NASA nationals.  I will take it slow as to not injure myself, but full steam ahead!!  After 17 weeks of dieting, post contest is HIGHLY anabolic, so want to take full advantage of it!!

Besides continuing training, I am going to be adjusting my supplement stack.  I will cycle off creatine for a month and cycle on the Grean Lean, which is a detox/digestive support.  As I introduce foods back into my system, this will help my body make the adjustment, plus help keep from piling on extra bodyfat.  I will also ween myself off the Bio Heat and Nitro Burn PM and CLA.

Nutri-Sport & Full Potential Training Tip-core

October 20, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Almost everyone realizes the importance of training your midsection (or “core” as it is now commonly called).  This is especially important for those expectant mothers who need to continue to strengthen their abdominal wall and lower backs throughout pregnancy.

In this video at the Full Potential Training studio inside Nutri-Sport, Tasha demonstrates an excellent exercise for anyone, but especially expectant mothers who should keep their core strong, but might not want nor can do traditional exercises.  This exercise is also great for helping develop stabilization and balance.

For more information on personal training (including pre or post pregnancy training) contact Tasha or Daira at the information below.

Contest prep update -1 week out!!!

October 15, 2009 by · 2 Comments

Hard to believe the NANBF Natural USA is next weekend!! I tested my bodyfat yesterday and came in at 5% and I feel totally ready. I had a little scare today as my intestines started to cramp, but that went away after a few hours, so good to go.

This week I continued to break the traditional rules and have been testing my strength levels. So far at 1 week out I have hit personal records in my deadlifts, squats and hack squats. Tomorrow is bench day and hope to do the same there. Have my training cycle planned out for after the bodybuilding contest to get ready for the powerlifting meet. Have achieved the goal I initially wanted (to maintain strength levels) and have set new ones!

For supplements, I have been very happy with my stack and attribute maintaining my strength and muscle retention to it. Extremely happy with the Bio Heat and the Nitro PM for my fat loss agent, along with sipping on Xtend throughout the day for the BCAAs.

Hard work is done, time to just do what I have to do to finish things out!

Contest prep -2 weeks out

October 8, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Wow, time has flown by! Hard to believe I’ve been dieting since July!! This has been a very smooth contest prep for the NANBF Natural USA in Chicago on Oct 24th. I believe the variety of food choices has really helped a lot on this. Everything is right on track, looking to come in stong!

Speaking of strong, I am simply amazed at how my strength has held. I attribute this to focusing on progression of weights and cycling my training to allow for recovery. I continue to get stronger with my leg exercises as well as the bench press and deadlift. My shoulder and lower back feel awesome and looking to start my training for NASA powerlifting Nationals at 100% right out of the gates.

For supplementation, the 100% liquid egg whites have be awesome to keep me satisfied and is very convenient. In either a shake or cooked as an omelet, they have been great. I am also going to add some night time herbs in before bed as sleeping has been increasingly difficult.

Have been working more on posing and putting together my routine. Looking forward to having fun with it as this will be the first time my kids will see me onstage!

Workout/nutrition tips

New sports nutrition products

Sport Beans

Getting a quick dose of carbohydrates before an event or workout is critical.  This helps fuel your performance as you train.  While the gel packs are very common, a new generation of preworkout products are available in Sport Beans!  Yes, you guessed it, these are jelly beans with the ingredients needed prior to a tough workout.  They include: 24 grams of quick absorbing carbohydrates, electrolytes and antioxidants.  Tasty and effective, you’ll want to give them a try!

Stack this product with Xtend for amazing endurance!

Raspberry flavored Xtend
Xtend is one of our favorite products, why??  Because it has been scientifically proven to work and it is good for any type of training (endurance or power).  By stacking BCAAs, glutamine and Citrulline, this amino acid combo not only improves performance, but also increase muscle building and fat loss.

Blueberry and Raspberry flavored 100% Casein

This is not only the slowest digesting protein you can get, but also in an awesome new flavors!  We recommend mixing it in a bowl with good fats anyway and eating it like a custard, but with the flavoring already in it, you don’t have to even add the peanut butter to enjoy the taste!

Training tip: Working with fatigue-Reverse pyramid

The common practice during training is beginning at an easy pace or lighter weight, then working things up to go either heavier or increasing speed.  This is a not a bad or wrong way to set up your working sets or splits, but another option is what we call a reverse pyramid.  How it works is you start off the beginning of your training as heavy or intense as you can go, then as the sets continue, you lighten the load and do more reps or back off the intensity.  Why this is effective is that you are using the most weight when you are your strongest or going as fast as you can when you are fresh.  In order to make this work, proper warm up is critical (which we discussed in last month’s newsletter) to avoid injury and prepare the body for the upcoming work.

Nutrition tip: Carbohydrate/calorie cycling
In order to lose bodyfat, one must create a calorie deficit, usually with a combination of food restriction and increased output (cardio).  While it seems simple, you don’t want to just waste away and haphazardly reduce things as you can lose muscle tissue quickly and cause your body’s metabolism to significantly lower.  By staggering your intake and having calculated spikes in your calorie and carbohydrate intake, you keep your body guessing, which helps the metabolism stay high but also retains muscle tissue better.  Both of these are critical to continue progress and keep from the dreaded “yo-yo” diet.

Recipe: Power pudding
Ryan has been using this in his precontest prep diet.  It is a slow digesting meal, great before bed or in during the day to curb appetite and sustain muscle tissue.
100% Casein protein (Chocolate Peanut Butter), raw almonds, psyllium husk powder
Chop 14 almonds up and combine in a bowl with a heaping scoop of the casein and 1/2 Tbsp of the psyllium.  Mix dry ingredients up, then add just enough fluid, about 1/3 cup (water or milk depending on calorie restriction) to make nice and thick.  Put in freezer for about 5 min.  Take out, eat and enjoy with a spoon!  Next month watch for the famous “Protein Pumpkin Pie recipe for Thanksgiving!!”

Contest prep -3 weeks out

October 1, 2009 by · 1 Comment

Right on track!!!  At this point I feel right on, have done absolutely everything I have to do and am very pleased with my progress!  Absolutely at an all time best.  What continues to amaze me is that my strength has not gone down.  This week I did deadlifts off the floor, 400 for 5 reps, very happy about that.  Was a judge at the NANBF Bluffs Classic and watching the other competitions keeps me motivated too!

This week I have switched to using 100% liquid egg whites for a couple meals instead of protein, just to eliminate the residual 4-6 grams that are in the timed release whey.  I have also had more casein to keep me satisfied with it’s slow digestion.

Nailing the workouts, cardio too and looking forward to the contest, then turning right around and switching gears to hit NASA powerlifting nationals in January!  Planning my training cycle now, it’s gonna be intense!!!
