Nutri-Sport & Full Potential Training tip: Medicine ball pushups

March 30, 2010 by Ryan Irwin · Leave a Comment

There are many aspects to fitness: strength, cardiovascular, flexibility, balance, coordination, to name some.  Today’s exercise hits on strength, flexibility, balance and coordination.

In the video below, David demonstrates medicine ball push-ups.  This exercise directly hits the chest, shoulders and triceps.  What really makes this a great exercise is that since you are using a med ball, it requires shoulder stabilization, plus one arm at a time helps develop balance between each side.  Having to roll the ball back and forth requires coordination and focus, which are important especially in the athletic world.

Give this exercise a try at the end of your next chest workout.

Nutri-Sport supplement tip: Arginine

March 24, 2010 by Ryan Irwin · Leave a Comment

The circulatory system and blood is your body’s transport system.  This is the method that you get oxygen and nutrients to all parts of your anatomy plus return waste products (such as carbon dioxide).  This is helps explain why when people get more muscle mass, often their veins become more pronounced (due to more blood flow need) and why cardiovascular training improves the efficiency of the heart and longs (due to more oxygen exchange requirements in the blood with the body).

Increasing the amount of blood your body can deliver to the outlining muscles can be advantageous to improve not only the performance but also the recovery process of exercise.  A supplement that can assist in this process is the amino acid L-Arginine.  The body uses Arginine to make a compound called Nitric Oxide that relaxes the smooth muscle vascular cells, thereby increasing the blood flow through “bigger pipes”.

By doing so, the performance is increased as the muscles are getting more nutrients, which can improve performance as shown in the study here.  This is also beneficial for other aspects, such as those with other conditions such as cardiovascular disease (see American Heart Association study here) or for other conditions such as erectile dysfunction.

Common methods to supplement are either in powder or tablet form, 30-45 minutes prior to exercise.  Another method is to add some to your water bottle and sip on throughout exercise.  Taking Arginine prior to bed is also a beneficial time to help assist with recovery and healing.

Nutri-Sport & Full Potential Training tip: Dumbbell floor presses

March 16, 2010 by Ryan Irwin · 1 Comment

If there was one exercise that everyone knows, it’s gotta be the bench press.  This is a great exercise to work the upper body, especially the chest, triceps and shoulders.  While it’s a great addition to the workout, there are variations that can be even more beneficial.

One of the variations is demonstrated by David in the video below.  The dumbbell floor press is a great exercise that really emphasizes the triceps.  If someone has trouble locking out the bench press or would just like to target their triceps, this is a perfect addition to their program.  Another benefit of this exercise is that it takes a lot of strain off the shoulders and elbows, so if one has an injury or is chronically sore in either of these areas, this variation will prove useful.

Nutri-Sport supplement tip: Glucomannan for fat loss

March 11, 2010 by Ryan Irwin · 2 Comments

It’s all about digestion!  Well, there’s more to losing bodyfat than this, but one key factors is the rate at which your body digests food.

When on a calorie deficit food intake, you want to choose foods that are slow digesting for a few reasons.

  • Lower blood sugar (which keeps insulin levels low, promotes fat loss)
  • Satiety (feeling full verses hungry helps control appetite and splurges)
  • Increase metabolism (by causing the body to “work” more to digest food, increases the calorie “expense” of that food)

To further increase this effect, one of the products we carry in our Ultimate Fat Loss System is Glucamannan.  Glucomannan is a supplement that is a water soluble polysaccharide dietary fiber that you simply take 20-30 minutes before a meal and it slows the rate of absorption, which will accomplish the points mentioned above, but also help you feel fuller quicker and help keep you from over-eating.

In the International Journal of Obesity, studies showed a 5.5 lb reduction and decrease in cholesterol in only 8 weeks.  What was even more impressive was that this was without a change in their diet or exercise program.  Besides the fat-loss and cholesterol lowering benefits of Glucomannan, it can also help with constipation.

Including Glucomannan in your supplement program, along with the rest of our Complete Fat Loss System, plus with one of our customized meal plans and an exercise program from our certified trainers will get/keep you going on the right path to reach your full potential!  It’s not about quick fixes, it’s about long term results and a healthy lifestyle!

Nutri-Sport & Full Potential Training tip: disc split squats

March 9, 2010 by Ryan Irwin · 1 Comment

When training, it is important that you not only just do the exercise, but do it in proper form and emphasize the muscles that you want to target.  In other words, don’t just lift weights, but “feel” the bodyparts working.

In this video, David demonstrates a great variation in the Nutri-Sport studio to the split squat on the smith machine that helps emphasize the quads and requires more balance and stability, all of which is great for athletes or just those looking for a way to shake up their workout.

Throw this exercise into your leg routine at your next workout to shake things up. For more information on our personal training in the Full Potential Training studio, click here.

Nutri-Sport supplement tip: CLA for fat loss

March 5, 2010 by Ryan Irwin · 2 Comments

Without question, the most popular supplement category (especially as warmer weather approaches) is the fat loss aides.  There are a large amount of different types of products that this includes (thermogenics, lipotropics, appetite suppressants, metabolism boosters, etc).   Then there are products that have stimulants and those that don’t.  In other words, there’s a lot to choose from.

Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) is a popular fat loss aid with good reason.   CLA is a  naturally occurring free fatty acid found in meat and dairy products.  Research has shown that CLA not only helps reduce bodyfat, increase lean muscle and is simply overall good for healthy cells in the body.  This supplement also is anti-catabolic (minimizes breakdown of the body) and enhances the immune system.  Here is a resent study done that was published regarding the improvement in strength and body composition (see research here).

One of the other reasons we like CLA is that because it is non-stimulant based, it is one that individuals can continue use for a longer period of time, plus take in the evening to help assist with fat loss without having trouble getting to sleep.  It is because of this that we recommend it in our first phase of our Ripped Stack.

Nutri-Sport & Full Potential Training tip: 1 arm shoulder press

March 2, 2010 by Ryan Irwin · Leave a Comment

The shoulder joint is one of the most unstable joints in the body and is also one of the most used as well.  This is why it is important to not only work on increasing the strength and muscle mass around the shoulder, but to also focus on balance and stability.

In this training video, David demonstrates a great shoulder exercise that accomplishes all four of those objectives:

This is a great exercise to incorporate into your training program whether you’re training for sports-specific activities or just want to improve your fitness level.
