Precontest progress update: 7 weeks out IFPA Pro International

I have not been doing a very good job at updating our blog with my precontest progress, but I assure you it has been in full swing!!  I began dieting 18 weeks out (happened to be the Monday after the Nutri-Sport Natural Iowa) and am currently 7 weeks out.  The IFPA Pro International contest is Sept 17th in Kansas City.  This is an IFPA natural pro bodybuilding contest that will have two if not three different weight classes.

Prep has been going great, if all comes in like I expect, I will be 5lbs heavier than my last contest, just as conditioned if not more so.  Additionally, strength has continued to be there as my powerlifting goals are right there next to my bodybuilding goals.  I am invited back to the 2012 Arnold Sports Festival in March of ’12 so I don’t want to lose a bunch of strength and start my powerlifting cycle weak.  We have been running 5/3/1 as you can see in my training log here.

Currently I am doing both sprint HIIT cardio and SS cardio.  I am still lifting heavy to retain muscle and relying on diet and cardio for bodyfat loss.

My supplement stack is as follows:  Creatine, beta alanine, L-Carnitine, Xtend (during), Casein, Scivation Whey, MCT oil, Bio Heat, Great Tea, CLA, ZMA, Arginine/Orthinine, antioxidants, multi, 7 keto, liquid egg whites, Novem/GPLC.  Fish oil, D-Aspartic Acid/Estracourt.

I started my off season about 170lbs and am currently about 158.  Last time I stepped on stage around 143/145 so hopefully I’m going to be about 150.  Below are my 18 week starting pick and my 8 week out pic.

Continuing to refeed higher carb days 2x per week for muscle retention and to keep metabolism ramped up.  Will add in Burn PM soon as well as HMB to help stay as anabolic as possible.

New format for our small group training

Next session starts Mon, Aug 1st!
We have been holding our Bodyscultping sessions for many years now and have had countless clients utilize our program to get some amazing results!  In fact, we boast about an 85% retention rate.  Most of our clients use this as their exclusive training protocol.  Being that it really is more like personal training than group training, we have switched the sessions into a monthly format (beginning this month).  For $150, you get 4 sessions per week at either 5 or 6 AM, noon or 7 PM.  As always, we strive to help you make the most of your training both in and outside of the studio by monitoring your nutrition and watching your progress.  Groups are at most 10 clients per session so you don’t get lost in a crowd.  If you want in, let us know!

1 cup oatmeal

*Mix all ingredients together and roll into approx 12 balls (sandwich between wax paper to avoid the extra mess).  Refrigerate for 30 minutes.

Q. What’s the most important supplements?

 

A. The foundation is a multi-vitamin (see our latest blog plost), omega 3 fish oil and getting quality protein in your daily intake.  Next, make sure your recovery shake has your bases covered (carbs/protein/creatine) and third, BCAA’s during your workout (Xtend).  This is a solid foundation.

Nutri-Sport Supplement research: Vitamins for optimal training

Vitamins are one of the most basic supplements available on the market today. Although a person can obtain all the necessary vitamins through food, many people are vitamin deficient which can lead to a number of negative side-effects.

A large supplement review conducted by a collection of exercise physiologists looked into the importance of vitamin intake to find out how it could influence training. What they found was that, especially during times of heavy training, a high vitamin intake may help athletes tolerate training to a higher level by reducing oxidative damage. Another benefit seen from a healthy vitamin intake was a stronger immune system. The study suggested a one-a-day vitamin, or a post-exercise shake that was rich in vitamins. Multi-pro whey is a great post-exercise shake that not only delivers important protein, but also has a full vitamin spectrum for a healthy immune system.

Ryan’s two favorite meals (before bed and post workout)

I’ve had people ask me about my two favorite meals that I prepare daily (whether off-season or precontest).  These are both delicious and functional nutritionally.  They are my before bed casein dessert and my post workout cereal.

Before bed dessert

Before bed you want something that is slow digesting.  Casein protein is the slowest digesting protein you can have.  I further slow this down by adding good fats and fiber.  Also, no one wants to be up at night going to the bathroom so I minimize fluid and make it thick.  Ready, here we go:

  • Casein protein (I weigh out 33 grams and use Optimum Casein, usually chocolate or vanilla)

    Optimum 100% Casein

 

 

 

 

 

  • 1 Tbsp of psyllium husk powder (I use NOW Foods unflavored and mix into casein)
  • 14 chopped almonds (you can also use 1 Tbsp of PB here or 1/2 Tbsp of MCT or Macadamia oil)
  • 1/2 cup of liquid egg whites (this adds 12 grams of protein and slows digestion more, improves protein quality plus adds a better creamy texture)
  • a swig of flavoring (my fav is sugar free Torani caramel)

Stir together in a bowl (will be thick).  Place in freezer for about 5 min to chill.  Enjoy with a spoon!

 

Post workout Cereal Mix

After you workout you want something that gives your body what it needs to recover but is also easily digestible.  I love cereal plus I workout in the morning, so for me a cereal mixture has been awesome.

  • 1 cup of puffed brown rice (this is 15 grams of carbs and is the “cereal”, great filler and adds a nice crunch.  Cracked red wheat is another good grain
  • 1 scoop of Carb Slam (waxy maize).  This is 30 grams, is unflavored and depending on my carb intake this can be anywhere from 1-3 scoops.
  • 1.5 scoops of Scivation whey (when dieting I use 1 scoop of whey and 1/2 scoop of casein for slower digestion)  I like choc, but have been know to switch it up.

  • 1 Tbsp dextrose (for fast carb source and insulin spike plus sweeten it up a bit)
  • Creatine (increases strength/size)
  • Beta Alanine (reduce fatigue)
  • L-Carnitine (assist with muscle growth)

I put all of these dry ingredients in a tupperware along with a plastic spoon and put in my gym bag.  After my workout, I run some water in it, mix it thick with my spoon and take my capsules (ALA/Vit C & E/B Complex) with my Xtend that’s left over from my session.

Most know the importance of protein in their diet but carbs are essential as well.  While it is easy to get them into our diet (carbs) having an efficient source to properly restore muscle glycogen post workout is critical. Q. Do I take carbs after workouts even if it’s in the evening?

 

A. Absolutely.  If you look at your nutrition intake, two of your largest meals should be before and after your workout (so shame-shame if you don’t eat anything in the AM before you hit the weights).   Your body needs to restore glycogen and recover after an intense workout no matter what time of day it is.

Supplement research: Forskolin for fat loss

According to the article found at Vitamin Research Products, scientists at the Penn State University College of Medicine have found that many obese people have lower than normal cAMP production in their cells. Along with that a recent small study seemed to confirm this finding. In this study six overweight women took forskolin twice daily for eight weeks. At the end of those eight weeks, participants lost an average of ten pounds, and reduced their percentage body fat by almost 8%. Based on both of these findings indicate that forskolin may be a safe, effective adjunct to losing weight and maintaining a normal body composition especially for those with impaired cAMP production.
