Starting with the basics

April 6, 2009 by Ryan Irwin

The other day I had a customer come in that was 22 years old.  We were talking about training and supplementation.  He continued to ask about testosterone boosters, both natural and pro-hormones.  I was explaining the differences but as I always do, asked him what he was currently taking  and what his goals were.

As it turned out, he really didn’t have a clue on the difference between carbohydrates, protein and fats, let alone when to take them.  While there is nothing wrong with this as I LOVE to educate people on proper nutrition, he knew a lot about the testosterone boosters!  First, at his age, that is something that his body doesn’t need yet as his levels are still high.  Additionally, it floors me that he wasted all this time to research these supplements without first getting his basic nutrition figured out!

After I went over nutrition 101 with him and discovered he was lacking in his nutrient timing, he purchased a $12.00 container of maltodextrin to mix with his whey protein post workout verses the $65.00 plus boosters he was originally looking at.  He not only left with more money in his wallet, but also is going to get better gains because of it.  I would much rather see someone purchase a custom nutrition plan to optimize their intake verses buying supplements without the proper nutritional foundation.
