Nutri-Sport Nutrition Tip: BCAA’s spell recovery

April 10, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

There are several benefits to using BCAA’s. One of more beneficial side effects, in our opinion, is how you can strategically use them to help with decreased muscle soreness. Now, this doesn’t mean that they’re not good for other things as well.  Studies have also shown that BCAA’s are involved with hypertrophy (growth) of the muscles and can provide significant protection against future muscle injuries.   New http://assets.bodybuilding.com/store/prodimage/prod_26397/image_26397_450_white.jpg research has come out revealing that if meals spaced out 4-6 hours apart can keep your body in an anabolic state by sipping on/taking BCAA’s in between meals (but still take advantage of fat loss).   BCAA supplementation has grown in popularity in recent years by the use of both bodybuilders and athletes alike for the  benefit provided by these supplements.
We here at Nutri-Sport Full Potential Training have been advising to customers the benefits of BCAA’s for sometime now (I.E. Xtend, Anabolic Bridge or Healthy selections BCAA pills/powders). Below is a link to an article which might find interesting on BCAA’s.

Nutri-Sport Training Tip: Lying cable pullovers

April 5, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

The latissimus dorsi, commonly referred to as “lats” is one of the primary movers of the back muscle group.  Additionally, it is one of the main muscles involved in the bench press.

As Mike Beiter explains in the video below, by strengthening the lats you will increase your bench press and other pressing exercises.  The lying cable pullovers are a unique and effective way to train this muscle which is has a great carry over affect to the bench press.  Not only that, it is a great exercise to isolate the lats which can trigger muscle growth and that coveted “V-taper”.

Throw this in on either your bench press or your back training session for an effective accessory exercise.

20 years of consistency and training for Ryan Irwin

February 20, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Today marks the day 20 years ago that I decided I would be a bodybuilder. I remember distinctly walking into weight room at Saydel High School the Monday after the state wrestling tournament (I watched, as a wrestler I never made it to state myself) with a mission to compete as a bodybuilder.

Day after day, I consistently keep hitting the weight room, eating right, learning everything I could and taking the skinny weak kid who didn’t have to cut weight to make the 103lb class to someone who was confident enough to step on a bodybuilding stage, which I did a little over a year later as a young teen.

Over the years, my goal turned into my passion and I have competed over 20 times. In that time I have made sacrifices, gone through struggles, accomplished goals and have seen great things that the iron has taught me.

While I am proud of my accomplishments, consistency, progress and dedication, I know there are things that are much more important to life than bodybuilding and powerlifting. I also know there are others that have overcome many times more difficult trials and completed much more impressive feats (like the soldier risking his/her life for another, or the single mom who raises her kids cause their loser father walked away).

However I do know the iron has made me a better person today, a better husband and a better father. It also has allowed me to take this passion to help others. Having someone come up and say you changed/saved their life is powerful. Celebrating the victories with others is constantly fulfilling.

It has been an amazing journey and I can say that when I walked behind the bleachers to the high school “weight room” that day 20 years ago, while I knew the goal that I set, I had no idea what other aspects it would bring. Here’s to another 20 years!

Nutri-Sport Nutrition Tip: Creatinol-O-Phosphate, then latest breakthru supplement?

February 17, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Creatine is one of the most tried and tested supplements on the market today.  It works, period.  A new supplement in the industry has an identity crisis and is being mistaken for creatine, which is creatinol-o-phosphate (COP).

While COP is a molecular compound that enhances muscular performance as well, it does it in a different manner.  Once absorbed by the muscle cells it prolongs anaerobic glycolysis.  What this basically means is that when pH levels normally would cause fatigue and the muscles to stop contracting, COP can help you push through to trigger more muscle and strength gains.  By increasing time under tension, you can bust through plateaus in your training.

Creatinol-O-Phosphate

We recommend combining it with your pre-workout formula and consume it 30 minutes or so prior to your training session.

Nutri-Sport Training tip: Pause squats

February 14, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Hitting proper depth on squats is important and equally so is being comfortable in the “hole”.  Additionally, you want to be consistent in your form and range of motion.

Pause squats are a great exercise that will help you achieve this.  As Ryan Irwin demonstrates in the video below, by holding the bottom portion of the squat three seconds, it trains you to know and feel comfortable in the bottom portion of the exercise.

This is a great accessory exercise after doing some normal squats or on a lighter leg day.  Give this a try on your next squat session.

Supplement review: Raspberry ketones for fat loss

February 9, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

The latest buzz in the fat loss world is raspberry ketones, many due to Dr. Oz’s mention of it on his show (world take note, if you have a product, get his endorsement and you’re set!)

Raspberry ketones are not new.  In 2005 there was a study done showing that they reduce the amount of fat that is absorbed by the body and also demonstrated an increase in lipolysis (fat burning).

While these are both great effects, raspberry ketones can be even more effective by combining them with other proven fat loss aids such as green tea, caffeine for example.

Of course, no dietary supplement is effective without a proper exercise and nutrition program in place.  If you need assistance getting this going, we can help with either personal training and/or meal planning and nutrition coaching.

To emphasize, there are no quick fixes, but with proper workouts, the right nutrition and smart supplementation (which might include raspberry ketones for you), you can look and feel your absolute best!

Visit either Nutri-Sport location to pick up raspberry ketones and other fat loss or muscle gain supplements, where you want to go for results and not a sales pitch!

Nutri-Sport Training Tip: Analyzing exercise technique

February 7, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Proper form and technique is critical for exercise execution, especially when heavy compound lifts such as the squat, deadlift and bench press are considered.

In this video, Ryan Irwin demonstrates the impact this can make.  By recording footage of lifts or having an experienced trainer watch the attempt, one can go back and correct the breakdown in form.  In this case, losing back arch and forward lean causes a failed attempt.  The other take home lesson is don’t let missing a lift or an extra repetition mentally beat you.  Even if you don’t come back and get it that day, know that you WILL succeed and get it next time!

Nutri-Sport Nutrition Tip: A PHAT tip on fats

February 2, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Most individuals are afraid of fats in their diet and are really missing out.  Fats are not only needed but do many different beneficial things.

As Ryan Irwin explains in the video below, fats can help with reducing hunger, keeps blood sugar stable, improve brain function and inflammation.  When we do nutrition coaching/meal planning, ensuring the right fats are included at the right times.  This is especially important for precontest diets and athletic performance.

Add fats into your meals (except for post workout recovery shakes for fast absorption) and make sure you get the essential fatty acids (like omega 3) in your day.

For these and other great carbohydrate and other supplement options, come visit either Nutri-Sport location to help get you by in a pinch next time!

Nutri-Sport Training Tip: Pin press for a bigger bench press

January 31, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

When performing the bench press, the most common spot that people get stuck at is right off their chest.  This is also known as the sticking point.

In the video below, Mike Beiter demonstrates the pin press, a great exercise that helps people get through this spot by forcing one to come to a complete stop right off the chest, then generate power right out of the hole.

Key points on this is to maintain your normal form by keeping your arch and position throughout the exercise.  Make sure the bar comes to a complete stop and rests on the pins/rack prior to pressing (no bouncing).  Try this after your normal full range bench press as an accessory exercise on your next training session.
