Nutri-Sport Training Tip: DB bench press
January 17, 2012 by Ryan Irwin · Leave a Comment
Two of the things that people focus on in the gym are increasing their bench press and having a sculpted chest. Well my friends, this exercise variation accomplishes both.
In this video, Mike Beiter demonstrates a variation of the flat DB bench press. This variation puts more emphasis on the chest and shoulder stability compared to the traditional version. Not only will this help carry over to more strength in the bench press and other upper body exercises, but it will increase hypertrophy (muscle growth) in the chest.
Try this variation on your next chest or upper body training day.

Results from IFPA Pro International
September 28, 2011 by Ryan Irwin · Leave a Comment
Last weekend was the climax of 18 weeks of dieting and year round training as I hit the stage for the IFPA Pro International in Kansas City. I knew going in that this would be one of the toughest contests I have been in and it didn’t disappoint.
There were 12 of us in the lightweight men class from all over the US and Canada. I weighed in at 151.5, which was 10lbs heavier than my last contest (July ’10) but I was still one of the lightest onstage. I was very pleased with this increase in mass (mainly in legs/back) which I attribute to my powerlifting training. However, my conditioning wasn’t as razor sharp as it needs to be to place at this level. There were a couple factors that attributed to this, which I recognize and will improve for next time (color being one of them).
I am now reverse dieting, slowing bringing my nutrient intake up to allow for my metabolism to increase without gaining a bunch of bodyfat. This actually requires more discipline than the regular diet in my opinion as the contest it will affect is a year away. However, champions are made in the off season (in fact one would say there is no “off season”).
A big thank you to my amazing wife, Mandee who I could do none of this without her love and support. Also to my training partners, Cody Nour and Mike Beiter, who push me past my limits and was there through all the workouts. Cindy McGuire at Hands On Sports Massage and Dr. Tyler Molstre at True Life Chiropractic, which both helped my recovery tremendously and kept me injury free. Finally, Scivation for all their support and supplementation on my journey.
My next goal is back to powerlifting. I am again going to be competing at the Raw Challenge at the Arnold Sport Festival in March of 2012, and will be doing the USAPL meet in Freemont, NE as a warm up in December. By staying strong through my contest prep, I am looking to smash my previous personal records (PRs) this year. You can follow my training blog here.
Below are some pictures of prejudging and finals, along with my posing routine.

Supplement research: GPLC
June 24, 2011 by Ryan Irwin · Leave a Comment
When you train, it is blood flow that is the carrier of nutrients to the muscles for performance. This is also the case after your session and the focus switches to recovery. Optimizing blood flow is a desired outcome to enhance both aspects. A supplement that you can add to your stack that does this and more is GPLC.
GPLC is short for Glycine Propionyl-L-Carnitine (also known as GlycoCarn USP). Research published in the JISSN has shown that this oral Carnitine (an amino acid) increases the amount of Nitric Oxide production, which in turn increases blood flow to the muscles (see study here). Studies used 4.5 grams and levels peaked at 90 min. Most pre-workout formulas contain some GPLC but often not the fully effecitive dose. Thus supplmenting with additional GPLC is effective by combing with your pre workout formula pre workout. Be warned that it is a very tart taste and at best your pre workout will cover the flavor.
In addition to helping optimize your training, the GPLC increases the amount of fatty acids that can be transported and burned during exercise, thereby increasing fat utilization and bodyfat loss.
GPLC is also a great anti-oxidant so the benefits of post workout recovery is further enhanced with this factor. If you are looking to take your workouts up a level and want your pre-workout to reach it’s full potential, add some GPLC before your next training session.

New evening Bodysculpting workout session added at Nutri-Sport Clive
January 29, 2011 by Ryan Irwin · Leave a Comment
As hundreds of clients have experienced, we have been offering Bodysculpting workouts at Nutri-Sport for a few years now. We are extremely excited to be able to bring back an evening session time slot beginning February 14th!
Bodysculpting is unlike any of the other “fitness challenges” out there. It really is more like personal training rather than group fitness. As the video below shows, it is small groups (no more than 10 people) and our trainers (who have college degrees in health plus certifications) lead the workouts. The training sessions are always different, focusing on all aspects of fitness to make it fun, challenging, but most important, effective on helping you look and feel your absolute best!
We want this to be a lifestyle change so one of the areas of focus are nutrition as well. At the beginning of the program, we educate participants what, when and why they should be eating. Throughout the 9 week program, we monitor their nutrition and make sure results are being achieved.
Check out this video below to get a small glimpse of what Bodyscultping is all about:
The next sessions begin on February 14th. The evening session is Tuesday/Thursday at 6:30 PM and Saturday morning at 7 or 8 AM. The morning sessions is Monday/Wednesday/Friday at either 5 or 6 AM, plus Saturday morning. There is also a noon session on Monday/Wednesday/Friday. Cost on the evening 9-week session is $225, the morning and noon session is $299.
Space is limited so sign up today!

Supplement research results: D-Aspartic Acid increases testosterone naturally
July 7, 2010 by Ryan Irwin · Leave a Comment
Testosterone is the male sex hormone that is well know to be a primary driver for muscle growth. In the pursuit of increasing muscle mass and strength, finding safe and effective ways to boost these levels is usually a priority in men.
Recently, in a scientific study published in the journal of Reproductive Biology and endocrinology, there has been an amino acid that has been shown to naturally increase testosterone and luteinizing hormone (LH) levels in the body. D-Aspartic Acid was shown to increase testosterone by 40% and LH by 25% in males. This was done on healthy males aged 26-37 and are significant increases. (see study here).
Being able to increase hormone levels naturally and within safe levels without dangerous and temporary prohormones and steroids is obviously a very good thing. For males looking to naturally increase their testosterone levels without the negative side effects, look to this amino acid for a boost to your supplement stack.
Come in to Nutri-Sport for this new product and other supplements for scientifically proven ways to get the most out of your training.

9-week Bodysculpting program
May 31, 2010 by Ryan Irwin · 2 Comments
We have a lot of success over the past couple of years with our Bodysculpting program. This program is different than many of the “transformation” programs out there. Really Bodysculpting is more like personal training than it is group fitness. We keep the number of participants in the workouts small so we can better supervise and push everyone. Additionally, the workouts are always different, both in structure and equipment used. The intent is always the same: stimulate the muscle tissue and bodyfat loss. Additionally, we focus on nutrition and proper supplementation to optimize progress.
Below is a video that goes into detail and gives a visual:
Classes run Monday through Saturday with varying times. New sessions start up every four weeks, space is limited so contact us or stop in to get your spot reserved and get ready to “reach your full potential”!

Contest prep update -1 week out!!!
October 15, 2009 by Ryan Irwin · 2 Comments
Hard to believe the NANBF Natural USA is next weekend!! I tested my bodyfat yesterday and came in at 5% and I feel totally ready. I had a little scare today as my intestines started to cramp, but that went away after a few hours, so good to go.
This week I continued to break the traditional rules and have been testing my strength levels. So far at 1 week out I have hit personal records in my deadlifts, squats and hack squats. Tomorrow is bench day and hope to do the same there. Have my training cycle planned out for after the bodybuilding contest to get ready for the powerlifting meet. Have achieved the goal I initially wanted (to maintain strength levels) and have set new ones!
For supplements, I have been very happy with my stack and attribute maintaining my strength and muscle retention to it. Extremely happy with the Bio Heat and the Nitro PM for my fat loss agent, along with sipping on Xtend throughout the day for the BCAAs.
Hard work is done, time to just do what I have to do to finish things out!

Contest prep -2 weeks out
October 8, 2009 by Ryan Irwin · Leave a Comment
Wow, time has flown by! Hard to believe I’ve been dieting since July!! This has been a very smooth contest prep for the NANBF Natural USA in Chicago on Oct 24th. I believe the variety of food choices has really helped a lot on this. Everything is right on track, looking to come in stong!
Speaking of strong, I am simply amazed at how my strength has held. I attribute this to focusing on progression of weights and cycling my training to allow for recovery. I continue to get stronger with my leg exercises as well as the bench press and deadlift. My shoulder and lower back feel awesome and looking to start my training for NASA powerlifting Nationals at 100% right out of the gates.
For supplementation, the 100% liquid egg whites have be awesome to keep me satisfied and is very convenient. In either a shake or cooked as an omelet, they have been great. I am also going to add some night time herbs in before bed as sleeping has been increasingly difficult.
Have been working more on posing and putting together my routine. Looking forward to having fun with it as this will be the first time my kids will see me onstage!
