When customers ask us what the most important supplement to take is, the answer is always a multi-vitamin, essential fatty acids (omegas) and a good protein, especially post workout. However, for those looking to increase their arsenal another step, they should examine pre and peri (or during) workout supplementation.
During an intense training session, you break your body down and create an incredible amount of stress on it. If you examine your supplement program, the amount you should take is likely highest around your workouts for this good reason. A recent study from the Journal of International Society of Sports Nutrition proved that consuming a supplement pre and during workouts containing creatine and 39 grams of carbs along with amino acids increased lean body mass, strength and decreased bodyfat (see study here).
By optimizing your intake before and during your workouts, not only will you feel better (stronger/more energy) during your workout, but you will get more results too!
Here is the supplement stack we recommend before/during workouts:

If there is a supplement that is considered “king” than it would have to be protein. In our experience when we ask clients and customers what supplements they are currently using, nine times out of ten, they say “a protein shake”. Granted, this is a very broad description of what should be a specific ratio of protein, carbohydrates and other essential elements, but the message is that most realize the importance of protein after a hard workout.
In a recent study published by the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition (JISSN), they put to the test yet again the power of protein. In this study, the researchers compared taking 30 grams of whey protein isolate post workout, along with breakfast, lunch, afternoon and evening meals. The control group took in 30 grams of carbs (equivalent to a piece of fruit) at the same intervals.
The results showed an increase not only in strength but also an increase in the recovery (see complete study here). This research shows yet again the importance of having protein (specifically whey) in your diet and eating frequently throughout the day (making sure high quality protein is in each meal).

Nutrition tip: Convenience
Having convenient options is important to hit your nutrition. One way to do this is to make large amounts of good food that you can scoop out of. A great carb source is mashed yams. Peel yams, cut into sections and boil till tender. Mash w/beater and then weigh out portions as needed (2.5 oz is 20 grams carbs). Mix in your protein (esp great with cinnamon roll or vanilla cinnamon whey), add it to veggies, lots of options. Look below for a great pancake recipe using it! Supplement tip: Check your foundation
Often times individuals get too wrapped up with what’s the newest, latest/greatest or what the other person in the gym is using. However they skip the critical beginning and look at their foundation. Anyone, no matter what their goals are, should have the fundamentals in place. This consists of protein (either fast/slow/timed release depending on goals), multi-vitamin (appropriate to their age/goals) and essential fatty acids (omegas). From there, one can branch off and get specific. Come in and one of our experts can help you design a supplement program that meets your needs and fits your budget.
Recipe: Sweet potato pancakes
Awesome breakfast!! Use the sweet potatoes discussed earlier.
Take 1-2 scoops of vanilla whey, 1/2 tsp of cinnamon, 1/2 tsp vanilla, 2 Tbsp oatmeal, 4 oz mashed yam and 1/2 cup of liquid egg whites (or 3 egg whites). Mix in a bowl and pour 1/8 cup amounts onto hot skillet, cook as you would a pancake. Serve plain or with peanut butter or sugar free syrup on top!

Meal replacements are just what they sound like, convenient replacements to a whole food meal. Using these are a great way to make sure you are getting the nutrients you need in a quick shake. Solution 5 is the ideal blend of protein, high fiber carbs, good quality fats and phytonutrients, giving your body ultimate nourishment, plus helping assist with fat loss and muscle gain. Delicious and curbs your appetite! New natural whey isolate: American Whey There’s no question that whey protein is one of the foundational supplements of any exercise enthusiasts stack. However, there are many different types of whey. One of the differentiating factors is the flavoring. Some prefer to stay away from artificial sweetners. This all natural bar is a nice snack size to tide you over, or grab two for a meal replacement! Training tip: Don’t quit, deload Often we hear customers say “I’m taking a week off” for a variety of reasons. While hopefully their intention is good to allow for recovery, there is a better way to accomplish this. Progressing your training intensity is important and instead of risking falling off the wagon, or to halt progress, back off your training level by 50% for a week. Studies show muscle can atrophy (breakdown) in as little as 4 days, so by getting the blood in the muscles, keep your metabolism cranking and promote healing, just back it off and keep going to the gym. We recommend some form of deload very 4-6 weeks. Contact one of our certified trainers if you want to have us help you discover these and design a program to accelerate your progress.
Nutrition tip: Eating purposefully
Often when people are struggling with their food intake, we find that they commonly say “they just grab whatever is around”. This is a bad approach as you likely aren’t getting the nutrients your body needs or too many of others. Eating purposefully means to plan your meals out and know what you are going to eat. It’s not saying you can’t enjoy a variety or taste, but rather eat with the purpose to get the protein, carbs and fats your body needs. Supplement tip: Stay healthy with antioxidants
While performance is a main driver in supplement programs, let’s not ignore just basic health. Antioxidants can be thought of as your “scrubbing bubbles” for your body. When you do everyday activities, a by-product of these are free radicals, which basically cause cellular damage. Antioxidants attach themselves to these and neutralize them. After workouts is a key time for this, plus during the day (breakfast and dinner). Common antioxidants include:

Acai berry
Recipe: Quinoa, your new favorite side dish
Quinoa is a grain, a staple for the Incas, that is unique in that it is a complete protein. The taste/texture is similar to brown rice and it is very versatile. Here is one of our favorites:
Ingredients: 1 cup quinoa, 1 cup brown rice, 1/4 cup MCT or olive oil, sodium free bullion, 4 cups hot water, 2 cups mixed veggies, serves 6-8.
Rinse Quinoa, then saute in a skillet w/oil till golden brown. Next, add brown rice, bullion and water, bring to a boil and then let simmer till all water is absorbed (about 45 min). As it gets close to being done, stir in veggies, cook for another 5-10 minutes. Serve as a side dish with about anything! Pick up your quinoa today at Nutri-Sport and give it a try!
